Activities to Do in Shenzhen: Shopping, Foot Massage, Hair Styling

Besides visiting miniature theme parks such as Splendid China and Windows of the World, you can also indulge in various activities e.g. shopping, massage and even get a new hairdo all at very cheap prices.  We got a cheap massage (foot + shoulder) near our hotel, at just 30 Yuan.  Totally worth it!

The sign below reads: Hair dying at 90 Yuan, Rebonding at 100 Yuan and Hair Treatment at 80 Yuan.  Just divide by 5 to get the price in Singapore dollars.  Is it worth it?  The girls thought so and they did up their hair here (again just 3 steps away from our hotel).

Most tourists shop at Lowu Commercial City because it is just at the border at Hong Kong and Shenzhen and sells a whole lot of different things from clothes to electronics.  We prefer to shop where the locals shop – at Dongmen pedestrian shopping street.  Dongmen’s prices are more reasonable and its also easier and more relaxing to bargain here.  Lesser irritating touts here too!  To get to Dongmen Pedestrian Shopping Area, take the metro to Lao Jie Station and get out from Exit A.  At Dongmen, you will find mainly clothes, bags (mostly counterfeit goods).

For electronics, try Hua Qiang Bei Lu Shopping Area (get out from Exit A of Hua Qiang Lu station).  This area is famous for its many electronic, digital parts and equipment markets.  The Hua Qiang Electronic World is considered one of the largest computer market in China – be it mp3, phones, memory cards, monitors, computers, parts, you should be able to find something here.

Always try to bargain even if there is a price tag on the item – chances are that you will get at least 20-30% discount from bargaining.  I will be sharing some tips in the next post on how to bargain when shopping in Shenzhen and Hong Kong – from my own shopping experiences.  :-)
