As the winner of Klik.TV “Choose Your Favorite Maid” Contest, I won an opportunity for an exclusive photoshoot with my favorite maid at Moe Moe Kyun (MMK) Maid Cafe which was setup in Suntec as part of the Anime Festival Asia 09 (AFA 09) in Singapore.  My winnings also included a pair of complimentary passes to AFA 09 (a one-day pass cost $15).

The Moe Moe Kyun Maid Cafe at Anime Festival Asia 09 features waitresses dressed up in maid costumes.  The maids would greet the customers with “Okaerinasaimase, goshujin-sama” or “Welcome home, Master (or Mistress, in some cases)” in English.  The food served is typically western or, rarely, Japanese, in origin. Signature dishes include omelette rice and curry rice.  These dishes are also decorated with appropriate condiments like ketchup or chocolate.

The dining experience at Moe Moe Kyun Maid Cafe was as authentic as you could get at one of the many Tokyo Akihabara Maid Restaurants, especially the rules.  The Number 1 Rule is that no photography is allowed within or outside the cafe.  There is even a very Singaporean “Russian” sentry posted at the exit to make sure of that and the other 7 rules.

Rule Number 1 will be enforced more strictly if you attempt to take a picture of the maids or the cafe surroundings.  They have no problems with you taking pictures of your food.  If you really really want a picture with your favorite maid, there is the option of a $5 Polaroid picture.

I chose Mika as my Favorite Maid for the Klik.TV contest because she has a very girl-next-door look.  You will agree with me once you see her attached profile below.  🙂

The cafe was actually just a small space partitioned from the rest of the Anime Festival Asia 09 fair, with standard exhibition tables and chairs and can accommodate about 20 patrons at any one time.  Nonetheless there was always a long queue to dine at Moe Moe Kyun Maid Cafe (expect at least 1-2 hours queuing time).

Once you get over the shock of the long wait outside, you might be greeted by another shock when you see the prices on the menu.  There are only 6 dishes – 3 main courses (Omurice, Hamburger, Chicken burger) at $25 each (includes coffee/tea and soup); 3 dessert courses (Green Tea Cake, Cheese Cake, Ham Salad) at $15 each (includes coffee/tea).  Miscellaneous things you can buy include the $5 Polariod picture with a maid.

After making your payment and staring at the vast emptiness of your wallet, you might be comforted slightly by the sight of a maid greeting you with “Okaerinasaimase, goshujin-sama” or “Welcome home, Master” and ushering you to a table.  I have to admit – whatever they said to me sounded gibberish – not because they pronounced the Japanese phrases badly but rather I have no idea of what they are saying. 🙂

We were served by the friendly and pretty Miyake who spoke very fluent Japanese (although I don’t understand a word – it sounded fluent to me) and English to ask on our preference for coffee or tea (she didn’t offered “Coffee, Tea or Me”) and sugar and creamer.  As a typical Otaku (Japanese equivalent of a nerd obssessed with all things anime – actually more of cute maids in my case :-)) and stunned by her beauty and sweetness, I just had to say “Yes” to everything she offered.  Haha..

Do note that there is a time limit to your dining experience at Moe Moe Kyun Maid Cafe.  Miyake asked if we had a watch or some device that showed what the time at that moment was.  She would then record the time and inform us when the 1-hour is up.

Miyake’s service was very thorough and interesting.  She prepared our tea by adding in sugar and creamer and stirring it well before serving to us.  For our Omurice, she drew a heart with the Japanese word for Heart (うら) in Hiragana to symbolize that this omurice is prepared with all her heart and soul.

And that’s not it – she did an “Ai Kome”: a ritual where she chanted “Moe Moe Kyun” + some other Japanese words and form a heart-shaped hand sign to project her heart/love into the food to make it more delicious so that we will be filled with energy for the rest of the day!  Very Kawaii!

Since the Moe Moe Kyun Cafe was open only during the Anime Festival Asia, I shall not rate it as what I would do for my other food reviews.
