Step Up for Singapore! Dance Flash Mob at Ion Orchard

10 July, 2011

As part of the National Day Parade (NDP) 2011 Step Up Singapore! Dance campaign, a flash mob was held at Ion Orchard Basement 4 on Sunday (1o July 2011). “Step Up Singapore!” is a dance campaign to reach out to Singaporeans and trigger their reflections on the meaning of the Singapore Spirit, and to create excitement about this year’s NDP.

“Step Up Singapore!” is choreographed by Mr Patrick Loo to a medley of popular NDP songs e.g. Home by Kit Chan, Stand Up for Singapore. The performers comprised over 200 dancers and volunteers from “Danz People”; the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports; Ngee Ann Polytechnic “New Revolving Age (NRA)” hip hop club; Nanyang Technological University contemporary dance club; National University of Singapore “D’Hoppers” dance club; National University of Singapore “Dance Blast” club; the People’s Association and Siglap Secondary School’s dance ensemble.

Check out the following video for the entire flash mob session (about 4 min 30 sec).  Look out for the special guest performance by Mr Yam Ah Mee (the Returning Officer Extraordinaire).  There was a bit of panic at the later part of the video (due to us having to clear the way for the pilot of the flag-bearing remote-controlled helicopter – sorry about that :-))

For a close-up view of the dancers, including Mr Yam Ah Mee’s dance moves, check out the following video:

Kudos to the government for trying out new and up-to-date ways to inject patriotism into our youths. Yam Ah Mee is playing his part very nicely. What a likeable fellow.
