Sembawang White Bee Hoon 白米粉 Review (You Huak (友发餐室) Coffeeshop at Jalan Tampang – Opposite Sembawang Shopping Centre)

11 December, 2014

This is a picture of the coveted plate of Seafood White Beehoon 海鲜白米粉 served at the famous Sembawang White Bee Hoon 白米粉 coffeeshop (also known as You Huak (友发餐室) restaurant).  People drive from different parts of Singapore to wait for hours during dinner at Sembawang White Bee Hoon 白米粉 coffeeshop just for this plate of Seafood White Beehoon 海鲜白米粉!

The plate of Seafood White Beehoon 海鲜白米粉 pictured here is the large serving S$12.  It comes in small (S$4.50); medium (S$8) and large (S$12) – if you have 3 persons – medium size would do; for more than 4 persons – order large.  But sometimes even a large serving is not enough because this white bee hoon is so so delicious!

The ingredients – prawn and sotong – are quite fresh and you have to eat this with the chili provided at each table.   The chili is unique as it is quite spicy and slightly sour at the same time.  I can’t describe the taste of this white bee hoon but when I tried it for the first time, I know that I will come back many many times it and I immediately understood why people would queue for hours to eat this.

Most people queuing for the Sembawang white bee hoon will be very familiar with this set of chairs as they will likely have been staring at it for a long time – the picture below is a rare sight but totally possible – just come early around 4.30pm.  If a queue for the Sembawang white bee hoon has formed, this set of chairs will serve as the barrier to enter the coffeeshop – you will need to order your food with the Sembawang white bee hoon staff first and then wait for a table to be available.

Selecting side dishes (the white bee hoon is a no-brainer choice – you just have to decide on the size) at Sembawang White Bee Hoon is really simple as the very popular side dishes are clearly marked on the menu.  For example, this Home Made Fried Bean Curd 自制炸豆腐 (S$10 for small/ S$15 for medium/ S$20 for large) is a recommended dish on the menu and indeed it is very very good – fried to its crispy goodness – dip it in the mayonnaise provided and it completes its yummyness!

Before we go further to introduce more of our favorite side dishes (of course accompanying our favorite Sembawang White Bee Hoon 海鲜白米粉), let me show you the menu for Sembawang White Bee Hoon coffeeshopclick the picture to expand to see the menu more clearly.

Another must try is the Meat & Seafood Roll 虾栆 (S$10/ S$15/ S$20).

For some vegetables – try this Sweet Potato Leaves 番薯叶 (S$7/ S$10/ S$15).

The Stir Fried Sesame Kampong Chicken (S$10/ S$15/ S$20) is not one of the recommended dish on the Sembawang White Bee Hoon menu.  While it tastes good, I wouldn’t recommend it as it is too much of a hassle to eat – too bony – furthermore, there are so many other recommended side dishes choices in the Sembawang White Bee Hoon menu.

Here is a picture of me enjoying my Sembawang White Bee Hoon – notice that my Transitions Signature lenses are completely clear indoor so I can see my favorite Sembawang white bee hoon as I savour it!

Here is a picture of me with my dad in front of the Sembawang White Bee Hoon coffeeshop – while it is known as You Huak restaurant officially – the big 白米粉 cannot be missed!

As you may have now known, my dad and I are both avid fans of Transitions lenses – although his Transitions lenses are an earlier version while mine is the latest Transitions Signature. As you can see in the picture, my Transitions Signature lenses are darker and that’s because they are powered by the exclusive Chromea7 technology that makes the lenses more reactive to direct and indirect light (like those lights bouncing off from the surrounding glass windows).
