Review of Sound of Music at Marina Bay Sands Mastercard Theatres

22 November, 2017

Despite being over 60 years old, the songs e.g. the catchy tunes like “Do-Re-Mi” in the Sound of Music musical are still very fun and relevant to today’s audience. Thus, it is not surprising that this is an award winning production i.e. the original 1959 Broadway production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and was Rodgers and Hammerstein’s biggest success. The 1965 movie starring Julie Andrews as Maria won five Oscars, including Best Picture, and remains one of the most popular movies of all time.

Set in Austria on the eve of the Nazi annexation of the country, The Sound of Music tells the story of Maria, a nun-in-training who gets assigned to be a governess for widower Captain von Trapp’s seven children. She reintroduces music to the household, falls for the patriotic Captain and, together, they have to make some life-changing decisions after the Nazis arrive.

What was memorable for me was the cast. Do you know that the cast for Captain von Trapp’s seven children are recruited from children in Singapore. Yes, home grown talent! A total of 18 Singapore based children played the lead roles of Liesl, Friedrich, Louisa, Brigitta, Kurt, Marta and adorable little Gretl. They had to audition for the role and meet certain height requirements to play one of the von Trapp’s children (as you can see from the picture below) and when they were selected, they underwent intensive training. Considering that they only have about a month of training, I think they performed extremely well!

Sound of Music Do Re mi Fa So La

Besides the beautiful ensemble of memorable songs e.g. My Favorite Things, Do-Re-Mi, Climb Ev’ry Mountain, Edelweiss, The Lonely Goatherd, Sixteen Going on Seventeen, and of course the glorious title song The Sound of Music, the stage sets are just as beautiful and breathtaking e.g. the Austrian Alps and the smooth change from the living room to the bedroom to different parts of the von Trapp’s house.

From the music to the cast and then stage set, you can expect an awesome performance from this Sound of Music musical performance at Marina Bay Sands.  The Sound of Music is showing at Marina Bay Sands until 3 Dec 2017 – so don’t miss it!
