Exploring History, Natural Beauty and Beaches at Turkish Paradise of Antalya

9 December, 2010

Continuing on our Turkey travel series, we have a guest post from Ryan Child who usually writes about car hire Antalya on behalf of car rental site ArgusCarHire.com.  Here Ryan shares his experiences of Antalya and the best places to visit in the area with Turkey car hire

Antalya is a city that perfectly illustrates the prosperity, beauty and civic happiness that comes with building a town so in tune with its natural surroundings. With the Taurus Mountains standing tall on three horizons and the Mediterranean shining blue on the other, Antalya truly is a natural paradise.  The stunning mountains block any wind from entering the city creating a warm and tranquil atmosphere characteristic of all towns sitting on the Mediterranean Sea. This reminds me of my Morocco holidays in Casablanca chilling out by the Atlantic Sea coast with the mountains as the backdrop. The sea itself, bordering some of the most picturesque location in the world, accommodates beachgoers year round with its serene turquoise water and calm waves. Travellers visiting Antalya are sure to be amazed with the city’s surrounding natural beauty before they even enter the town centre that is rich with history.

Nothing says more about the lure of Antalya than the Turkish legend that talks of settlers that were charged by king Attalos to find “heaven on earth.” The explorers found the Turkish city and judged it worthy of meeting the rulers command. “Heaven on earth” is blessed with a historical background that rivals any other city on the globe. After suffering sieges from Roman and Ottoman forces, the city has architectural masterpieces that are still standing within the city limits. The old city centre of Kaleiçi features an array of ancient buildings that have been restored and now make up a network of exciting bars and restaurants that offer locals and visitors alike the opportunity to eat wonderful regional cuisine and then dance the night away. The Kesik Minare building illustrates Antalya’s history that transcends not only time but also different religions. Originally a church, the structure is now a frequently used mosque.

The beaches of Antalya are perhaps the city’s most popular attraction, with miles of coastline decorated with fine sand and glistening rocks. Spanning the west side of the city, the Konyaalti Plaji beach boasts amazing views and pebbled walkways. Further to the east is the beach of Lara Plaji, a soft sandy area that is popular with tourists who prefer to spend their days lounging on the beach soaking up rays of the Turkish sun.  Beaches in the neighbouring regions of Alanya and Olimpos are worth visiting and can be easily accessed by travellers with hire cars.

Antalya’s nightlife is famous for being the most visited in all of Turkey, with a diverse selection of nightclubs and bars. Club Arma and Club Cece are most popular with younger crowds that are looking for a vibrant dance atmosphere that goes on through the night. Club Aura is another nightspot that never seems to sleep through the regions consistent warm weather.

Hotels around Antalya include the Ramada Plaza that offers guests unbeatable service and amazing facilities. The DeJa Vu hotel gives its clients the choice of using its amenities that include a sauna, swimming pool and free Wi-Fi. Families are also catered for in Antalya at the friendly Sealife Family Resort. Every room at the hotel has balcony views of the nearby Konyaalti Beach that is within easy walking distance of the buildings front gates.

Located around 13km northeast of Antalya is the international airport that welcomes more than 16 million international passengers every year. Visitors with a hire car can get to the city in less than 20 minutes. The newly built Alanya Gazipaşa Airport will soon be in operation providing another option to the millions of tourists that visit the Antalya region.

Visitors to Antalya have a whole host of attractions that never fail to impress and amaze. Whether their interests lie in history, natural beauty or beaches, tourists have everything on their doorstep when visiting the Turkish paradise of Antalya.
