Wine and Dine at Cable Bay Vineyards Waiheke Island

26 April, 2011

Cable Bay Vineyards’ award winning Restaurant and Wine Bar on Waiheke Island have an enviable reputation for great food and wine with an unrelenting focus on quality. Besides the ala carte menu which offers a wide selection of food with wine and cheese, guests can also order from Cable Bay Vineyard Chef’s Selection Menu (Main and Dessert for NZD$63 per pax).

For Mains, the Rump of Lamb with Chickpea, Pickled Tomato, Queen Olives, Toasted Cumin Sauce was the best lamb dish I have ever tasted in my life – that’s how good it was! – tender and sweet meat complimented with taste of the cumin sauce; the servings were very generous too. The Dessert dish was just as memorable – Pave of Valrhona Chocolate with Toasted Coconut Ice Cream and Pineapple – the sweetness of the chocolate well balanced out with the mixed taste of coconut and pineapple.

The Cable Bay Chef William Thorpe has also designed a new Small Plates menu. Each plate is a treat in itself, or together they are a fantastic excuse to stay a while and enjoy the sunset. The menu includes a selection of cured meats, French cheeses, small plates from the sea and land and freshly baked bread with dips.

Besides good food, Cable Bay Vineyards has forged a reputation for crafting exquisite wines that are known for their subtlety, elegance and depth. Its commitment to growing the highest quality grapes, combined with traditional winemaking techniques, produces appealing wines with layers of interest that evolve in the glass. Definitely one of the finest red wine I had tasted in Auckland.

Auckland Waiheke Island Cable Bay Vineyard Lunch Restaurant

Cable Bay Vineyards is perhaps one of the few restaurants in Waiheke Island where you can arrive in style at its backyard via a helicopter flight from Auckland. If you are arriving at Waiheke Island via 35-minute ride on the Fullers Ferry from downtown Auckland, Cable Bay Vineyards is only 5 minutes by car from the Matiatia Ferry Terminal.

Cable Bay Vineyards offers great sea views overlooking the Hauraki Gulf and Auckland City. This experience is enriched by an extensive art collection, featuring sculpture and paintings by leading New Zealand artists. What’s perhaps most interesting about these art pieces has to be the price tag – for example the purple and blue cross titled aptly as “Cross(Road)” by Leon van den Eijkel will cost you $95,000!
