Getting Around Shenzhen via Metro

To get around the Shenzhen city area, tap on the modern Shenzhen Metro (深圳地铁).  It is the most convenient and cheap  form of transport to get around Shenzhen.  It will cost you ¥2 to travel the first 3 stops and a maximum of ¥5 to travel along the entire line.

There are currently 2 Metro lines – Line 1 (East-West line) stops at key tourist attractions e.g. Splendid China and Windows of the World as well as the border at Luo Wu while Line 4 (North-South line) stops by the City Hall.  The other lines are still under construction.

The Shenzhen metro station is easily identified by the green logo as seen in the picture below.  Single trip tickets are in the form of green tokens with electronic tags which you can tap to enter the barrier gate.  To get out of the station, you return your token by dropping it into a hole at the barrier gate.

We were very impressed with the efficiency and cleanliness of the Shenzhen Metro stations.  There were clear signages indicating where all the attractions are as well as English instructions and announcements.  However, the Metro service ends quite early at 11pm so plan your trip so that you don’t get caught outside without any train service.

The taxi service is also quite inexpensive.  Taxi meters start at ¥12.50 for the first 2 kilometers, then ¥0.60 for each 250 meters.  Do note that there are midnight surcharges as well.
