Unusual Hotels: Staying in a “Doghouse”
23 August, 2009USA’s Dog Bark Park Inn
If you are looking for a unique place to stay for a vacation with the ultimate dog lover (or maybe you’re the dog lover), this is the place for you – the Dog Bark Park Inn Bed and Breakfast in Cottonwood, Idaho, USA.
You will literally be staying in a “doghouse” – a dog-shaped building not a kennel :-). This looks almost like a Dog version of the Trojan Horse – don’t worry, there won’t be soldiers climbing out to attack you at night.
This dog shaped B&B (the world’s largest beagle) was built by Dennis & Frances. Dennis J. Sullivan, a self-taught chainsaw artist, has been carving for over twenty years. Frances joined him fifteen years ago and has also learned chainsaw carving. They made some money initially from selling wooden dog carvings and invested it all in developing and building Dog Bark Park.
To fit in with the theme, there is even a toilet disguised as a fire hydrant!

Besides the two big dogs, visitors may walk the grounds, browse the gift shop and artists’ studio featuring the chainsaw artwork of Dennis and Frances. At Dog Bark Park the artists enjoy sharing dog, travel and life stories as well as assisting visitors in planning their vacations.
Guests can enter the body of the beagle from a private second story deck. Go up another level and there’s more sleeping space and a cozy alcove in the muzzle. You can even take classes from soap making to the basics of Dutch Oven cooking at the local college during your stay.
The Dog Bark Park Inn is only open from April to November every year and of course dogs are more than welcome to stay too.
It cost about US$92 per night for a double room, inclusive of breakfast and more info can be found at their Dog Bark Park Inn official site.

23 August, 2009 at 10:09 pmHey, this is really cute! And it reminds me of the giant “rocking horse” in South Australia which I encountered in April during my trip there too.

Hmmm… it would be interesting to see how many places have these “giant animals”. Like the analogy with Trojan Horse… haha..
